Dr. Steffen was raised on a small grain and hog farm in central Illinois. After High School, he earned an AAS in Ag Mechanics Technology from Illinois Central College After working in the Ag Industry for 10 years. He returned to school and earned his BS in Ag Education from Illinois State University in 1986. After teaching in North Dakota for three years, he attended Iowa State University, earning an MS in 1990 (Ag Education) and a PhD in 1993. He taught at Illinois State University from 1992-94, then spent 12 years at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, as Assistant and Associate Professor. He returned to Illinois State University in 2006 as Associate Professor and was promoted to Professor in 2011. He is Program Coordinator for the Ag Education Program and the Ag Communication and Leadership Program.
